Casablanca used to be Morocco's “urban black sheep” – a French colonial creation that lacked the “must-see” historic attractions for which Marrakech and Fez are famed. But the country's economic capital has lately become a “dynamo destination”, says Michelle Jana Chan in Tatler, thanks to an impressive range of regeneration projects, such as a “sensational” new theatre by the “homegrown” architect, Christian de Portzamparc the “dazzling” new Marina and a new Norman Foster-designed hotel and shopping complex, Anfa Place. There is much else to enjoy in the city.

Morocco's dynamo-destination, with a name that quickens the pulse, is much more than just a movie. The country's urban black sheep is scrubbing up, with regeneration projects in the works that include Sir Norman Foster's complex Anfa Place on the surf-splashed Corniche the dazzling new Casablanca Marina (bring your yacht!) and the super-modern shopping complex Morocco Mall, home to Galeries Lafayette and other fancy French labels. Also underway are an inner-city tramway, a high-speed rail link to Tangiers and a sensational theatre by Christian de Portzamparc. Phew.

There are few cities blessed with that heady combination of urban grit, cultural diversity and laidback beach life. When you find them you want to pack your bags and move there. Think Rio, Los Angeles and Cape Town - and Sydney, lucky enough to be built around one of the world's most spectacular natural harbours. The coastline here ranges from rugged wild beaches facing the open ocean to secluded coves where snorkellers can encounter Eastern blue grouper, cuttle fish and Bennett's nudibranch.
